Alena McElroy Our family cannot say enough about the benefits that having our son in Karate made. Having had training in martial arts, I knew that it would help instill good discipline, focus, and calmness in a very active child. We attended one of Sensei Ellis's classes with our son when he was 6 yrs old. He immediately asked, Mom/Dad can I do that? Our answer was an emphatic YES. Four years later, our son had climbed the ranks and was knocking on the door to becoming a Black Belt. Our family cannot say enough about the benefits that having our son in karate made. I would recommend karate to anyone looking for that focus, calmness, discipline, and self-confidence that only martial arts training can provide!

Alex This is a wonderful dojo. I have been going for about three years and when I first started...I really didn't want to go. However, Sensei Ellis has a wonderful personality, and, through his teaching, the art swept me away. I am truly glad, now, that I was able to join. This dojo has a variety of classes and all the students are extremely welcoming. And not only is this a place where you can learn about self defense but also about important values and lessons of life. Sensei Ellis has much wisdom to share with his students, who he cares for like an extended family. There are various activities where we come together as a community have just have fun. Come try a class and see how fun we can be! More reviews at Google Places...

Amanda When I first came to Portland, it was with a background in Shaolin Kung Fu as a student, and I really didn't have an interest in Karate at all. I came to check this dojo on the recommendation of a friend, and had signed up by the end of the week. This is a dojo in the traditional style; there is a deep respect for the art and for your progress that is difficult to find in most modern dojos. It is treated as a journey, not a sport. And while you do not have to be a buddhist, or religious at all to get the maximum benefit, the workouts and the practice are deeply calming while also making you physically powerful. Sensei Ellis is no joke, either. His master is Higaonna Morio (google this name), the leader of the International Okinawan Goju-Ru Federation, whose master was also the head of the art, and so on up the line to the founders of Karate. This is one of those rare places where the art has been absolutely preserved, and there is no more authentic place in Portland to learn from. There are cheaper dojos, and more convenient dojos, but I dare say that after looking long and hard there are not BETTER dojos. This is a bad place to go if you are looking to get into MMA or sport karate, and an excellent place to go if you are looking to get deep into the martial arts and change yourself. More reviews at Google Places...

Blaine F. (Portland, OR) Karate on main is a wonderful, traditional dojo. The interior is beautiful, the sort of place where no one minds working hard.
Sensei is very knowledgeable and experienced. If you are looking for great, traditional Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate-do training and a new family, Seishinkan is the new home for you! More reviews from Yelp...

Char S. Sensei Ellis works well with all ages. More important, KOM has a family oriented environment which means teaching, training, and learning comes from a greater sense of caring. I love this dojo because of its art, but mostly because of the people. More reviews at Google Places...

Committed Karate Mom Karate has affected him behaviorally, emotionally and physically. Our son started karate at age 4, he is now 9 and we have seen his transformation. Our son is more capable of focusing. He applies himself and is more committed. He is also more self-assured.

Crystal Rounseville McKim Sensei Ellis is the best period. I am so grateful for all he has taught me & continues to teach. He is a great mentor, confident & teacher. I knew nothing about karate when I joined but he was very patient & believed in me when I didn't believe in myself. Do what he says, "Trust your Sensei, believe in yourself, sweat." I did & have lost over 70 lbs since I started. Karate on Main has changed my life!! I have made great friends within the dojo family as well.. I am so grateful that I'm here. I can't say enough good things about it. More reviews on Facebook...

Delaney I am 13 and I have been doing karate for about 6 years. Karate teaches you to have focus, respect, and confidence. I think that it is a great way to stay in shape and also, you actually learn how to defend yourself, not just how to look cool while learning to be violent. Sensei Ellis is a great teacher, who cares about his students. More reviews at Google Places...

Dawn Smith Eisenhauer The family class is a great way to spend quality time with the whole family. Sensei Ellis and the Okinawan style teach to the whole person and benefits all ages ranges. This Dojo doesn't make you a stronger person, it makes you a better person. More reviews at Google Places...

Fife I'm so glad I found this dojo. I stopped in on a whim one day, spoke to Sensei Ellis and I was hooked. It's now eight months later and I'm still hooked. Sensei Ellis has an approach that works well for me. He promotes hard work and dedication to the process. The other students are a big part of it too. The black belts are all very helpful. They all seem to be able to identify things I can do to improve without overwhelming me. I know that every time I go to the dojo I'm going to make improvements because there are always people there who are going to help me, whether it's with technique or moral support. More reviews at Google Places...

Hue Ghans an amazing place! all that can be said! More reviews on Facebook...

Jaimie E. (Portland, OR) I highly recommend this dojo! There is a large student body ranging in all different levels which makes the classes fun and not intimidating. A unique feature of this dojo is the family class and the women's class. I am a 32 year old woman and have been a member of this dojo for the past 7 years and wish I had started 20 years ago! More reviews from Yelp...

John L Harris III We love this dojo! Sensei Ellis is such a great mentor and roll model for all the kids (and the adults, too!). More reviews on Facebook...

John My son has been with this dojo for almost 2 years now. He's learned so much about respect (both for self and for others), physical fitness, and working towards and accomplishing goals. Sensei Ellis is wonderful with all of the kids. They learn in a supportive, positive, and challenging environment. I've learned that this is a sport for both boys and girls, and often whole families end up participating. I highly recommend this dojo! More reviews at Google Places...

Karen Weisman M.D. The most obvious and immediate benefit I have seen from karate has been physical strength. Also, I have always loved the philosophy that a Black Belt is a white belt who didn't give up! He may have his ups and downs from week to week, month to month, but sticking with something until it is accomplished is a great life lesson.

Ken Traditional Karate for the modern student! Sensei Ellis is great for building a solid foundation, both physically and mentally. This dojo remains true to the style and truth of traditional Goju-ryu Karate. It is refreshing to find a traditional path vs. the many "sport" karate centers focusing on a ring or octagon. In Seishinkan, your ring/octagon is what you practice during your normal everyday existence. The focus is on doing your best in all activities – this is the spirit of Karate do. More reviews at Google Places...

Kevin F (Sherwood, OR) Traditional Karate, Great Exercise, Training and Self Defense. Perfect for Kids helps with the kids focus in all aspects of life including School. Awesome Sensei More reviews from Yelp...

Kevin Saier Wonderful Dojo! My son started at age 4 and has been attending for 5 years. His little sister then started when she was old enough and finally my wife joined. She loves it. All three of them attend regularly and my son is working toward his junior black belt. More reviews on Facebook...

Leslie M. (Portland, OR) My son just turned 5 and has been taking classes here for about 9 months. We enrolled him after his pediatrician suggested we find such a program for him— he's big for his age and quite physical. In looking at several dojos, as well as other programs, we made the decision to attend Karate on Main. At his age level, the emphasis is on listening, following directions, showing respect to your teacher and your classmates along with trying your best. In the time we've been going, I've seen my son's attitude improve along with his coordination, strength and flexibility. He's now motivated to do his best and loves working towards the next colored belt. He says he's going to be a black belt, so we'll see. :) Sensei Dawn is great— she's tough when she needs to be, but loves the kids and it shows. More reviews from Yelp...

LORI My daughter has been with this dojo now for four years. Sensei Ellis teaches the kids respect for others and for themselves. My daughter used to be afraid of trying new activities, and had low self esteem. Now she is not afraid to take the lead whether at school, with friends, or physical activities. I cannot say enough good things about what this experience has meant for my whole family! More reviews at Google Places...

MaryAlice Finding Sensei Ellis and Karate on Main is one of the best things to happen to our son. Sensei has created an atmosphere of respect, trust and caring where children can learn and grow. The emphasis is on learning the art and growing individually - they compete against themselves, not each other. Our son has good values reinforced here and has learned leadership skills. His grades have improved and is now on the honor roll. Sensei has even helped him through some bumps in the road of growing up. I highly recommend this Dojo and Sensei Ellis - for children and adults alike. More reviews at Google Places...

Matt Baugh This is a great dojo. Traditional Okinawan karate, with very strong instruction and a great family atmosphere. You can't get a better workout, and you learn something new every class. Karate training at this dojo is the thing I look forward to most in my week. Sensei Ellis is one of the best teachers I've ever met. Of anything, anywhere. More reviews on Facebook...

Matt B. (Tualatin, OR) This is the best dojo around. I've been all across the country, studying martial arts for 20 years. This is the real deal. Traditional Okinawan karate, very strong, great work out, you will feel it. Chief instructor is a fantastic teacher. Serious, and a great sense of humor too. This is the dojo to join for the long term, with the whole family. More reviews from Yelp...

Pete Carey Sensei Ellis takes me back to my military days. He doesn't let me get away with any slacking. I enjoy the challenge and the camaraderie. It's a great dojo. More reviews on Facebook...

Rachel Love My husband and I had been looking for a traditional karate dojo since moving to Portland six years ago and we were delighted to discover 'Karate on Main'. Sensei Ellis is a wonderful instructor with the ability to push his students toward excellence using kindness, humor and a tough, no-nonsense attitude.
Our 8-year old son has shown marked improvements in behavior and attention since starting karate and my husband and I are getting into amazing shape! However, this practice is not just about physical training, emphasis is also placed on the development of mind, spirit and character.
I continue to be inspired by Sensei Ellis and the other wonderful instructors and I highly recommend this dojo to anyone interested in learning the art of Goju-Ryu karate. More reviews on Facebook...

R.H. This dojo is exactly what I was looking for. Sensei Ellis epitomizes Goju. He is an old school military guy who has learned that everyone learns differently. His teaching techniques are as fluid as his kata. He can be hard and loud or comforting and supportive. He always seems to know what you need to get you past the next hurdle. He has also gathered a group of senior students who all follow his lead. The result is a dojo where everyone works together to help each student. I work full time and spend a lot of time in traffic, but no matter how bad my day has been I always look forward to getting to the dojo. The work outs are always hard and the people are always great. More reviews from Yelp...

Ricardo Olalde Karate has helped our 11-year-old son in many ways. He started to practice karate when he was five years old and he really loves it. We can mention many benefits that have helped him a lot! He became very well disciplined. His self-esteem improved significantly. Being focused on obtaining his Black Belt, he has always been challenged and motivated to get one step higher. Many people think of karate just as a Japanese method of unarmed combat and they forget that it is more about development of many mental abilities that help you control both your mind and body.

Rick Karate On Main in Tigard has helped my son improve his self esteem and helped to improve his grades. I highly recommend checking it out. Prices are reasonable and they really seem to care. We've been there for about 2 years. Highly recommended! More reviews at Google Places...

Robin S. (Tualatin, OR) This dojo has become my second home. Sensei Ellis is an excellent instructor, unfolding the secrets and history of traditional martial arts. He teaches with respect, intensity and humor, creating an atmosphere in which all students seek to do their best, and to never give up. Training gives a workout for all muscle groups, promoting strength and flexibility. I encourage all to try this dojo, located on Main Street in Tigard. It is a fun way to make friends, get in excellent shape, and preserve the cultural treasure of Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate-do.
I love training at our dojo. I have made so many friends, and learned so much about myself. Once I enter the dojo, my mind is free from the stresses of everyday life. I live in the moment. I get to kick and punch people! I burn a lot of calories! I've improved my strength, flexibility and overall fitness. I have ab muscles now! And I'm having lots of fun.
Our Sensei is a wonderful teacher. He not only teaches us how to do karate, but also the history of Goju Ryu. There is so much to learn, and so much to practice. Sensei has many valuable lessons to teach us. Karate is not just a sport or exercise, it is a way of life. I feel part of a community, part of history, and it has enriched my life. More reviews from Yelp...

Sabrina S. (Portland, OR) My then 9 year old daughter had been bugging me to get her signed up for karate. Having no background myself and not sure what to look for, I enlisted the help of a good friend who had taken karate for several years and had always said it changed his life. His first recommendation was to look at Karate on Main, because it had been there for awhile—a good indicator. I asked him to come with me and we sat down with Sensei Ellis to talk about the program. He spent an hour with us going over how the program works. I was impressed with how well-rounded the program was—not just teaching kids to fight, but instead incorporating character building skills and a family atmosphere. After we left I asked my friend what he thought, and he said if it was him, he'd sign his kid up in a heartbeat. The program is solid, the curriculum is progressively and individually challenging, and the price is fair.
Since my daughter has ADD and had previously not succeeded in any group sport, Sensei Ellis suggested we let her try it out first. It took a couple of visits to the dojo and first just watching classes, then participating, and we are now almost 2 years into it and SHE LOVES IT! It's "group" oriented enough to give her a feeling of camaraderie and support, and individual enough to give a constant goal to be working on. I highly recommend this dojo. A very class act! More reviews from Yelp...

sean Our family was looking for a traditional Okinawan karate dojo in Portland for our kids (two boys aged 4 and 8), and only discovered Karate on Main by expanding our radius to include Tigard. Any "fighting art" will captivate kids, but the core curriculum in this dojo is clearly centered around character-development, with added benefits that include self-defense and fitness. While we were initially attracted to the size & quality of the kids' program, my wife & I ended up enrolling ourselves in the adult classes too—resuming our karate training from college and gaining an unexpected social outlet as well. In addition to the regular classes, Karate on Main organizes kids' tournaments among a handful of local traditional dojo, and hosts special events -- most recently a half-day Small Circle JuJitsu seminar taught by a student of Wally Jay; and an all-weekend okinawan kobudo (weapons) seminar taught by the head of the International Okinawa Kobudo Association. The teaching lineage of this authentic Okinawan Karate school training here is as traditional as it gets—there are no black gis, no pop music accompanying the kata performances, and no cage fighting. More reviews at Google Places...

Shay Briones Robert Ellis and Karate on Main has given my daughter the invaluable tools of self-esteem, self-discipline and self-confidence. She is stronger, more focused and more centered. She has grown to have a greater sense of respect for herself and for others. Sensei Ellis provides an invaluable service to our community with his karate school.

Sue Finding Karate On Main and Sensei Ellis a year ago has been a life changing event for our family of black belts. At a distance from our original teacher, we had been searching for a teacher to continue our training with when we found Sensei Ellis. Devoted to his teacher, his life-chosen style of Goju Ryu Karate and even more devoted to his students, Sensei Ellis inspires you to not only become your best as a karate practitioner but, also to become your best as a person. Being accepted in for training as his students is a great privilege that I highly recommend! Don't miss out on the opportunity to have life-skills training through karate at Karate On Main. Just visit a class and you will know what I mean. More reviews at Google Places...
